Swing From Uranus
I used to love baseball.
I suppose I should today since Asians are doing pretty good in the Bigs.
But I don't.
At least, I don't watch it.
But there's this idea.
About life.
I'd like to share.
In life, most jobs and callings and vocations are about a high batting average.
You want to get to as near perfect as you can.
1.000 BA.
So what's that mean?
Lots of bunts.
Slow rollers.
Hustle plays.
Now, there's nothing wrong with that.
Being a singles hitter.
It keeps the world rotating.
But me?
I've always liked the guys who swung from their arses.
Rob Deer.
Mickey Tettleton.
They didn't care about batting averages.
They hit bombs.
Stat nerds would say they focused on slugging percentage, but I think they just wanted to put one on the roof.
And so that's what I'd leave you with today.
Stop with the obsession with how many hits you have.
Start locking in on how far you hit 'em once you get ahold of one.
Focus on high slugging percentages (magnitude of wins) and screw batting averages (number of wins).
A hit isn't a hit.
Not in baseball.
Especially not in life.
A double beats a single, a triple beats both, and chicks (and dudes) will always dig the long ball.
And as the bookstore guy says, sometimes you can step up and hit a 1,000 run homer.
Pays for a lot of Ks.
Me?
I'm a Barry Bonds guy.
