Shorelines and Timelines
I've been sitting next to this thing.
Blinking at me.
Wanting me to say something.
Anything.
At least with my fingers.
And I've just been staring back.
Watching it watch me.
A standoff of sorts.
With the most minimal of stakes.
I usually write it all out, you know, then come up with a title.
Sometimes, it's the other way.
Today is a write it all out kinda day.
About ten years ago, I found a cool domain name that wasn't registered. And I was convinced this was it for me.
So I bought it.
Registered it for ten years.
Thinking it was it.
I was going to change the world with it.
Now it's up for renewal.
And I think, wow, where did those ten years go?
And how much has changed since that silly boy bought it?
I bought the .net and .org versions, too.
That's how (un)popular the domain was.
But I thought I was on to something.
Might still be.
The lesson here is at the time, a decade ago, I thought it's future was brighter than any star in the galaxy.
But I kind of forgot about it.
As people do.
Or rather, I found shinier things.
By year one or two.
Maybe four.
My perspective had changed, you see.
One rock leads to two rocks and pretty soon you're collecting rocks.
You're a friggin' rock collector!
Now, at first, you're just picking up anything that looks nice.
But soon, you learn discernment.
What makes a rock good or not so good.
What makes it valuable.
You leave behind rocks you would have picked up in a heartbeat years ago.
Some you throw back into the water.
You can call this experience.
I call it wisdom (or wissmart if I'm being cheeky, which is usually the case).
A decade ago, I was so sure (full?) of it.
And today, I know (am?) better.
To another ten, then.
And shinier things.
It seems so far away, but I know how fast it passes.
So let's make a deal.
You and I.
Ten years, we circle back.
To right here.
Where the ocean meets the land.
March 27, 2036.
I want to see what rocks you have collected from today to ten.
So bring 'em.
And may their sparkle guide your way.
🤝
See you soon.
