It's Never Personal, Always

You ever watch one of them true crime shows?

C'mon, I know you have.

They sometimes start it with a recording of an intense, frantic, 911 call.

Person on the line having the worst day of their life.

Here's the part that gets me though.

When the dispatcher is rude.

Or offended.

A plain ol' jerk.

Victim freaking out.

Operator sighing and annoyed.

Even pissed.

Taking sheet personal.

Basically, "I get you're going through something right now, but can you be nicer? Answer my questions in a less emotional way. How hard is that?"

😠

Dispatchers have an unenviable task every time they clock in.

I get that.

But I think, what a select few may need to work on, is remembering:

It's never about them.

If there's ever a job where it ain't about you, it's as a friggin' 911 operator.

Maybe we just recruit ex-NYC cab drivers and have them be emergency dispatchers nationwide.

They've heard it all.

And they can take it.

They wouldn't even have to move.

Just do that sheet from home.

Distributed workforce!

Shout out to the vast majority of dispatchers who do their job well and with empathy.

And to old cabbies.
