Hearing Aid
Sundays are harder days to write.
I don't know why.
Maybe it's because I should take the day off.
A day of rest.
But this is not really laborious.
This is play time.
And so I sits.
So I writes.
Oh, had a miracle happen the other day.
Whole family in our vehicle.
Driving around after some soaking of sun.
After some discussion, we decided to hit the local grocery store last minute so we turned down a side road.
It's that season so lots of construction.
We are waiting at a red at a T.Â
Can only go left or right.
We're in the left turn only lane.
Light turns green, I look left and right, all clear, and I start to go.
Now the lane I'm turning onto has two lanes. I usually turn left into the lane on the right, since I'll have to make a right soon after into the store.
Make sense?
So I'm turning and I hear my wife say, calmly but authoritatively, "Turn left. Turn left."
So I turn it tight to the left, getting into the left side of the left lane, and we see a pickup truck fly by us just barely missing our front bumper and right side.Â
Lady ran a red.
She never stopped.
Didn't seem to even slow down.
My wife says she gave us a nasty look.
Typical, right?
She had a big dog sticking its head out by her side, so we hypothesize maybe she was distracted.Â
But who knows.
Here's the weird part.
Both my son and my wife agree that my wife never said a word.
She remembers gasping and raising her hand up to the right side of her window in an attempt to shield herself.
But didn't say a word.
And my son agrees saying she said nothing.
But what I remember vividly and distinctly is she said, "Turn left. Turn left."
Twice.
And not panicked.
Calm.
Direct.
Matter of factly.
Just do it.
So I did.
Hard.
And the flying dog lady truck missed us.
We had a terrific boost of adrenaline and spent the rest of our day just praising and in a bit of shock.
Thankful.
Near misses are too often and quickly forgotten.
Or at least, not fully appreciated.
I don't want to do that.
So I'll write it down here.Â
To remind me to cherish it.
What's weird is this isn't the first time for me.
I had another similar miracle happen to me decades ago.
When I was a teenager.
Also on the road.
A voice told me to stop.
So I did.
But that time, I was in the car all by myself.
