Good and Bad

Let's talk about good and bad.

Not in an alignment sense, but sort of.

I mean quality. Ability. Competence.

These things are easy to see in professionals like doctors or lawyers.

A good lawyer can save your life.

A good doctor can stop you from being sewed.

Something like that.

But a bad one?

Woo boy.

The thing that I learned is that bad professionals can give great results.

A broken clock, after all.

And the other way.

Good ones can fail.

It's not a foolproof thing, because there are humans involved.

And here's the thing I wrestle with.

Would I rather have a bad lawyer or doctor who produced (through no ability of their own) a great result?

Or, a good one who sheet the proverbial bed?

I know the right way to think is the latter.

You want the latter.

The good on a bad day.

The good always.

But results driven people like me ponder.

Hesitate.

Great results are all that matter.

Right?

Right???

Perhaps I am too particular.

A poorly written cover letter just sours me.

As does a lack of charm. Or too much of it.

These are perhaps not the best way to gauge things, but alas, here we are.

Of course, a good professional delivers good results.

Consistently.

But it's not always so.

So I'll ask you, do you want the result or the intention?

The ends or the means?

You want a blind squirrel or Michelangelo on an off day?
