Game Time
Here's the deal.
It's this dance.
What is?
Life.
You have to work through this balancing act.
Between today and tomorrow.
Juggling it.
The things you spend on today (not just money) can take away from your future self.
Meaning a dollar wasted today is some multiple of that lost tomorrow.
Opportunity cost.
Opportunity lost.
You can be taking money, health, and sanity out of your future selves' reserves.
It works the other way, too.
Saving for the future self means today goes without.
Somewhat.
Now, obviously the sliding scale has a sweet spot.
One each of us has to determine on their own.
And many of us, sadly, do not have that luxury.
Today is the only day that matters.
It is a day of survival.
I understand.
I lived it.
And so an old(ish) man who plays the long game suddenly realizes he might be in the fourth quarter of a game he thought was only at halftime.
And there's the wisdom wissmart right there.
No one knows how much time is left on the clock.
It takes a degree of faith to play long.
I am all over the place today.
But what I'm getting to is this.
Most of us start off wanting to be great.
But I think most of us really seek to be good.
And there's always time to be good.
Greatness is, under the hood, often a tragedy.
You wouldn't want that life.
You think you do, but you don't.
And I believe, I hope, most of us would love to be known as a good person.
He is a good man.
She is a good woman.
Who do you believe is that?
And, are you?
And what are you doing today, or tomorrow, that shows this?
I'm not asking for me, I'm asking for you.
⏲
Clock's running.
Shoot, pass, set a screen, or call a timeout.
This hasn't been my finest writing, but at least you know I ain't ai.
